The weekends are busy in Aix and ours was no exception. On Saturday afternoon we went to see the Cezanne/Picasso exhibit and the Musee Granet, and it was interesting. The crowds were thick, however, and I get claustrophobic around that many people in a tight space. By the end, we were ready to get out -- and to calm down with a glass of champagne while people-watching (at a distance!) on the Cours Mirabeau. It was a gorgeous day.
Sunday was equally beautiful and after coffee and croissants on the terrace of a Cours restaurant, we launched into a day of walking about and simply absorbing the feel and flavors of Aix. It was market day again -- this time featuring antiques -- and there were blocks and blocks of them. We didn’t buy anything, but it was fun to look.
Yesterday afternoon we decided to go to another movie -- we can’t get over how different the movie theatres are -- and, since this was an American-made movie we assumed it would be in English with French sub-titles. Wrong! It was “Inglorious Basterds” (yes, that’s the way it’s spelled in the title) with Brad Pitt. It was ghastly. Since it took place in occupied France during World War II, there was lots of French. If I’d seen it in Denver, I assume the French would have been sub-titled into English, but since we were watching it in France, they apparently didn’t see the need to sub-title it into English. Then there was German -- lots of it -- which would also have been sub-titled into English at home, but since we were in France, it was sub-titled into French! Brad Pitt played the part of a Southern hick (Southern U.S., that is) with an imbecilic accent which should have been sub-titled into pig-Latin. There was w-a-a-a-a-y too much violence for us, and we couldn’t wait for it to be over so we could deconstruct it over -- what else -- champagne on the Cours Mirabeau!
As I write this it is early Monday morning (6 a.m.!) and tonight is Weigh In. I’ve never dreaded it more than tonight, and Brad even said yesterday that he bets I’ve put on weight this week. I wish Angela were here to tell me that I will do better next week. And I will.
More after weigh-in. Meanwhile, note five new photos below...
